during the first
half of the 16th
century, the great
genius of
michelangelo (1475-
1564) dominated the
art of the italian
high renaissance.
michelangelo
thought of himself
primarily as a
sculptor, not a
painter. sculpture
was the purest art,
he believed, the
closest thing to
divine creation.
^s:PRESSANY
this belief stemmed
from his continual
interest in the
human figure's
three dimensional
qualities-- its
roundness and
organic shape.
thus painting on a
flat surface to
achieve the
illusion of depth
was not enough for
him.
^s:PRESSANY
because of this
emphasis on
organic form, his
figures, whether
painted or
sculpted, breathe
with the presence
of body and spirit
that make the stone
or canvas come to
life.
^s:PRESSANY
michelangelo was,
to a degree, a
victim of his own
genius. his
temperment and
over zealous
devotion often led
him to take on more
than could be
accomplished. this
overburden led to
frustration and
disappointment for
most of his life.
^s:PRESSANY
our gallery has
four walls, each
displaying a detail
of one of
michelangelo's
works.

standing over
thirteen feet tall
and radiating a
challenging energy,
michelangelo's
"david" (1501-4)
represents the
earliest monumental
statue of the high
renaissance.
^s:PRESSANY
this statue was
commissioned to be
put high up on a
buttress of the
cathedral in
florence, but
instead the city
officials placed it
in front of the
pallazo vecchio as
the patriotic sym-
bol of the floren-
tine republic.

"moses", completed
about a decade
after the "david"
monument, projects
the presence and
power of the
biblical hero.
^s:PRESSANY
"moses" was de-
signed to be part
of an elaborate
sculptural plan for
the tomb of
julius ii, but the
project was never
completed. had the
project been exe-
cuted in full, the
tomb would have
been michelangelo's
greatest
achievement.

the sistine chapel
frescos depict the
creation of the
world, man's fall
and his final
reconciliation with
god. driven by an
inner force,
michelangelo fin-
ished the chapel in
only four years
with over 300
painted figures.
^s:PRESSANY
the creation scene
depicts an earth-
bound adam with his
hand reaching up
toward god soaring
through the sky,
their finger tips
almost touching.
we can tell by the
application of the
plaster that he
painted the figure
of adam in only
three days.

architecture pre-
occupied mich-
elangelo for the
last thirty years
of his life. he
worked on such
elaborate projects
as the piazza del
campidoglio, the
conservatori
palace, the porta
pia, and of course,
st. peter's.
^s:PRESSANY
the seventeen years
that he was chief
architect on st.
peter's, the work
progressed at an
unparalled rate.
the dome was or-
iginally designed
by michelangelo,
but went through
some alterations by
della porta and was
completed in 1590.
the dome of st.
peter's is an un-
mistakable landmark
over the city of
rome.
